Good Boy Good Girl

Rattan Sculpture by Chan Hwee Chong

The Immobilizing Grip of Societal Forces

The Good Boy Good Girl design by Chan Hwee Chong draws inspiration from the rattan cane, a tool commonly used by Singaporean parents for corporal punishment. In the eyes of these parents, the cane serves as a means to shape and mold their children's character, ensuring they stay on the right path.

What sets Good Boy Good Girl apart is its unique portrayal of the immobilizing grip of societal forces on children in a fast-paced environment. The sculptures, constructed using rattan cane, reinforce not only the rigidity of the body but also of the mind. This design highlights the pressures and expectations placed on children, showcasing the struggle to conform and meet societal standards.

The sculptures stand approximately 1.4 meters tall and are created through a combination of rattan weaving and a metal structure. This technique allows for the intricate detailing and durability of the design.

Good Boy Good Girl has been recognized for its excellence and innovation, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation category in 2022. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial standards. The design is respected for its integration of industry best practices and technical characteristics, contributing to a better world and evoking positive emotions.
